Why Napier grass + cow dung?
Napier grass supplies almost all of the gas. A 10 TPD plant draws about 99% of its CBG from the grass. The small dung share supplies active microbes and buffering that keep the digesters stable on a fibre-rich diet. The design priorities are:
- Napier harvest (60–75 days)
- Shredding
- Twin-screw shearing
- Mixing with dung & recirculated digestate
- Hydrolysis tank
- 2–3 CSTR digesters
- Upgrading
- 10 TPD CBG
Feedstock required for a 10 TPD CBG plant
| Feedstock option | Daily feedstock | Annual feedstock (330 days) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Napier grass (fresh) + a little cattle dung | 200–280 TPD | 66,000–92,400 t | Needs about 350–550 acres of irrigated Napier |
| Cattle dung only | 400–600 TPD | 132,000–198,000 t | Stable digestion; large collection logistics |
| Press mud | 200–300 TPD | 66,000–99,000 t | Seasonal; store for the off-season or co-digest |
| Paddy straw (air-dry bales) | 80–110 TPD | 26,400–36,300 t | Harvested in a few weeks; needs a large bale yard |

What makes or breaks a 10 TPD project
- Feedstock security: 350–550 acres of Napier under your control or long-term contract, with a monsoon buffer of about two weeks
- Digester redundancy: two or three digesters, not one, so maintenance doesn't stop production
- Power: an HT connection sized early. It is often on the critical path.
- Gas evacuation: about 13–14 cascade loads a day, or a pipeline tie-in to a nearby CGD network
- Digestate plan: 160–200 m³/day of liquid fraction needs a lagoon and farmland. LFOM can fertilise the Napier fields.

Frequently asked questions
An indicative full-scope budget for a 10 TPD Napier or agri-residue CBG plant is about ₹50–80 crore, excluding GST, land and working capital. Eligible greenfield projects can receive GOBARdhan capital assistance of up to ₹2 crore per TPD (up to ₹20 crore for 10 TPD), subject to scheme guidelines and caps.
Typically about 200–280 tonnes of fresh Napier grass per day plus a small quantity of cattle dung (for example around 5 TPD) as inoculum and buffer. That needs roughly 350–550 acres of irrigated Napier.
About 24,000–26,000 Nm³ of raw biogas per day at 55–60% methane, which is upgraded and compressed into 10,000 kg of CBG.
Total digester working volume is typically around 20,000 m³ for Napier at 36–40 days retention, usually split into two or three digesters so one can be maintained without stopping the plant.
Roughly 14,000–18,000 kWh per day, about 1.4–1.8 kWh per kg of CBG. An HT power connection is normally required, plus backup for critical loads.
At the SATAT minimum procurement price of ₹46/kg (plus taxes), 3,300 tonnes of CBG a year is about ₹15 crore in gas sales, plus FOM/LFOM income and eligible Market Development Assistance on FOM. Actual pricing under GOBARdhan should be checked against the current notification.
