Maharashtra at a glance
- Main CBG feedstock: Press mud & distillery spent wash
- Typical plant size: 5–20 TPD (often mill or distillery integrated)
- Central support: GOBARdhan capital assistance up to ₹2 crore per TPD for eligible greenfield plants
- Biovardhan scope: feedstock study, DPR, approvals coordination, turnkey EPC, commissioning & O&M
Why Maharashtra is ready for CBG
- A dense network of sugar mills and distilleries gives concentrated press mud and spent wash
- Sugar groups can integrate CBG with existing land, utilities and management
- Large urban wet-waste streams for municipal CBG
- Strong CNG and industrial gas demand along major corridors
Main CBG feedstocks in Maharashtra
| Feedstock | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Press mud | Good gas potential. Plan storage for the crushing season (about November–April). |
| Distillery spent wash | High-strength liquid effluent available year-round at distilleries. Needs an effluent-specific digester design. |
| Sugarcane trash | Field residue after harvest. Fibrous, so it needs pretreatment. |
| Municipal wet waste & cattle dung | Segregated city waste, plus dung from dairy belts. |

Recommended plant design for Maharashtra
For sugar groups, the key design question is the off-season. Spent wash runs year-round, while press mud is seasonal. Combining them, or adding dung or Napier grass, keeps the plant at rated output across the year. Digestate can go back to the cane fields as FOM.

Central & state support for CBG in Maharashtra
Under the GOBARdhan National Unified Scheme (₹23,731 crore, FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36), eligible greenfield CBG projects in Maharashtra can receive capital assistance of up to ₹2 crore per TPD, along with assured offtake, a pricing framework and support for pipeline connectivity. The CBG blending obligation for CNG and PNG creates steady demand. State-level industrial, renewable-energy or bioenergy policies may offer further incentives. Frequently asked questions
Yes. Mill-integrated CBG is one of the most common models in Maharashtra. It uses press mud, and often distillery spent wash, with shared utilities and land.
Yes. Spent wash is available year-round and is widely used for biogas and CBG, but it is high-strength and variable, so the digester and pH control must be designed specifically for it.
Through stored press mud, co-feeding with spent wash, cattle dung or Napier grass, or a combination. The DPR should model month-by-month feedstock availability.
