Punjab at a glance
- Main CBG feedstock: Paddy straw (parali)
- Typical plant size: 10 TPD and above (straw supply is abundant but seasonal)
- Central support: GOBARdhan capital assistance up to ₹2 crore per TPD for eligible greenfield plants
- Biovardhan scope: feedstock study, DPR, approvals coordination, turnkey EPC, commissioning & O&M
Why Punjab is ready for CBG
- Paddy straw is available in very large quantities within short transport distances
- Stubble-burning control has made ex-situ straw management a state and central priority
- A baling and straw-aggregation ecosystem is already developing around existing plants
- Intensive farming has depleted soil organic carbon, creating demand for FOM
Main CBG feedstocks in Punjab
| Feedstock | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Paddy straw | Main feedstock. Harvested in a short October–November window, so it must be baled and stored for year-round operation. Needs shredding, milling and shearing. |
| Cattle & buffalo dung | From dairy farms. Ideal co-substrate that adds microbes and buffering to straw digestion. |
| Wheat straw | Mostly used as dry fodder, so treat it as a supplementary feedstock only. |
| Press mud | Available near sugar mills during the crushing season. |
How much feedstock do you need? Use the feedstock-to-CBG calculator, or see sizing for a 5 TPD and a 10 TPD plant.
Recommended plant design for Punjab
Design the plant around storage. A 10 TPD paddy-straw plant needs roughly 80–110 TPD of baled straw, about 26,000–36,000 tonnes a year, most of it collected in 4–6 weeks. Plan a large bale yard with fire-safety spacing and a full pretreatment line (bale opener, hammer mill, twin-screw shearing). Co-digest with cattle dung for stable biology.

Central & state support for CBG in Punjab
Under the GOBARdhan National Unified Scheme (₹23,731 crore, FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36), eligible greenfield CBG projects in Punjab can receive capital assistance of up to ₹2 crore per TPD, along with assured offtake, a pricing framework and support for pipeline connectivity. The CBG blending obligation for CNG and PNG creates steady demand. State-level industrial, renewable-energy or bioenergy policies may offer further incentives. Frequently asked questions
Yes. Paddy straw has good gas potential when properly pretreated, and Punjab has more of it than almost anywhere in India. The challenges are its short harvest window, storage and its silica-rich fibre, which need a bale yard and a shredding–milling–shearing line.
Roughly 80–110 tonnes of air-dry baled straw per day, about 26,000–36,000 tonnes a year at 330 operating days, collected mostly in October–November.
It can, but most designs co-digest straw with cattle or buffalo dung. Dung supplies active microbes and buffering, which makes start-up and day-to-day digestion more stable.
