CBG Plant in Tamil Nadu: Feedstock, Design & Turnkey EPC

Tamil Nadu offers an unusual feedstock mix: paddy straw from the Cauvery delta, poultry litter from the Namakkal egg belt (one of India's largest), press mud from sugar mills, and banana and other horticulture residues. Large cities add segregated wet waste.

Tamil Nadu at a glance

  • Main CBG feedstock: Paddy straw, poultry litter, press mud
  • Typical plant size: 3–10 TPD
  • Central support: GOBARdhan capital assistance up to ₹2 crore per TPD for eligible greenfield plants
  • Biovardhan scope: feedstock study, DPR, approvals coordination, turnkey EPC, commissioning & O&M

Why Tamil Nadu is ready for CBG

  • Cauvery delta paddy gives large straw volumes
  • The Namakkal poultry cluster supplies nitrogen-rich litter for co-digestion
  • Sugar mills and banana plantations add further residues
  • Chennai, Coimbatore and other cities generate wet waste

Main CBG feedstocks in Tamil Nadu

FeedstockWhat to plan for
Paddy strawDelta districts. Needs baling, storage and pretreatment.
Poultry litterHigh in nitrogen. Excellent as a co-substrate, but limit the share to avoid ammonia inhibition, and remove grit.
Press mudFrom sugar mills during the crushing season.
Banana residue & wet wasteBanana stems and leaves, plus segregated municipal organic waste.

Recommended plant design for Tamil Nadu

Balance the carbon-rich paddy straw with nitrogen-rich poultry litter. The right blend improves the C:N ratio and gas yield, but the litter share must be controlled to avoid ammonia build-up. Grit removal ahead of the digester is essential with litter.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, as a co-substrate. Poultry litter is nitrogen-rich, so blending it with carbon-rich paddy straw or other residue improves digestion. Too much litter, though, causes ammonia inhibition.

The Cauvery delta for paddy straw, the Namakkal–Salem–Erode belt for poultry litter, sugar-mill districts for press mud, and large cities for wet waste.
